Many years into working as a model I realized stereotypes about my own job had prevented me from realizing my entire self. In believing the narrative of models as pretty but talentless I missed recognizing the incredible leadership all around me, including from the people I least expected, including from myself. I was years into this career before I could see my coworkers, models, and others working in fashion, weren’t there because they aspired to pretty, but because they aspired to much more. And, like many examples of feminine leadership, of leadership by women of color, history had done a good job of burying our work and our words. It's true that there are very few spots for women at the top in fashion. Although we make up 80% of the industry we are rarely in charge (not on sets, stores, or garment factory floors). In fact, there are few opportunities for any independent voices: most brands & media outlets are owned by a handful of conglomerates. But I also learned the 1rst labor union in the US was organized by the Lowell Mill Girls - garment workers, most of whom were teenagers and immigrants! And, New Deal labor protections came out of garment workers & allies organizing in the wake of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Now I am more sure of myself and my peers, I feel rejecting the hierarchy of the industry could be our superpower. If we organize, we can lead our industry in a whole new direction. 3 yrs ago, @ainerosecampbell and I co-founded @modelactivist, and now there are hundreds of us in community, supporting & incubating this leadership. Last night we got to hear from brilliant model leaders @グレースマハリー @andreeadiddy @iammarimalek @sarahdeanna @inherentlyqueer, hosted by model-entrepreneur @laraasiral, cofounder of @neoncoat. We enjoyed each other's company, strengthened our relationships, & learned together. In being so superficially valued, I am encouraged to evaluate my contributions so I know precisely that I am neither an empty ornament nor a precious exception. And I hope that shines through the stories I've been telling of organizing models: community building can happen anywhere, trust & love are abundant, and from them so much can grow!
