The number of emotional support animals in the U.S. has been growing rapidly. Many Americans say these animals have done wonders for their mental health and claim they have a right to live with the animals, as well as to take them onto planes and into restaurants and stores. But critics say many are really just pets that do not merit special status, and more than two dozen state legislatures have enacted new laws to crack down on fraud.
