The port of Majuro, Marshall Islands is currently full of fishing vessels with capped coolers. The fishing has been great since the measures implemented by the PNA (Parties Nauruu Agreement) were terminated (closure of FADs, fishing aggregation devices). Long story short, the supply is greater than the demand and the buying price is low so the vessels are holding on to their stocks until it changes. The costs of the wait for a boat full to keep up to 1,000 tons of frozen fish is between 10,000$-20,000$. Overfishing isn’t due to overpopulation, but rather greed of a well-oiled machine worth billions of dollars. Link in my bio to a great blog by @franciscoblaha discussing those issues. Thank you @hilary.robyn for reaching out!! 📷 @anthonyjrayburn taken on a trip with the @mscbluefish doing a good job at monitoring sustainable fisheries in the region.

Can just say I love everything about what you’ve said here. There are systems and non profits in place making attempts to change these happenings but depending on where you are and the culture of the environment there, sourcing makes a complete shift from sustainable to, as you said, greed. I’d be interested in hearing more about what you have to say about the matter. In Seattle I was able to source 90% of my seafood from sustainable Fisheries. I’m making an attempt to do the same here in Baton Rouge. It’s slow going as of yet. I sincerely appreciate the fact that not only are you a sport fisher and obviously an intelligent woman but also aware of the industry happenings that are, and long have been, in need of reform.

@bc_dekker unfortunately it’s not as simple as saying hunt and fish for personal consumption only, that’s not the world we live in and it’s extremely impractical. So that being said we know that that will not change, so people need to be informed on how their eating habits are affecting our ecosystem. Personally I source my seafood from oceanwise, which is a company trying to do everything their power to provide quality ingredients while being as least destructive as possible. Now these companies may not be perfect but they don’t use trawling methods and they will also let us know at the restaurant what’s available and what won’t be in the coming weeks, based on many different factors!

@bigbarsinstabox Of course there is. But a lot of fishermen to this day are still part of modern fisheries. The corporations paying them way below minimum wage are the problem. We are also the problem by “demanding” low costs products. A cheap tuna steak isn’t really “cheap”. It’s either the ocean (overfishing), workers (mordant slavery) or consumers paying the price. We have to start understanding that we are in an ecosystem and learn how to respect it (seasons, species varieties, etc). If history of humanity showed us one thing, it’s that depending on a small amount of products isn’t increasing our quality of life!

Those guys who became pirates off the coast of Somalia, did so because factory ships from far off countries came and cleaned out the fish that they fed their families on. If that happens to me. I’d steal your shit to. The bigger fishing nations, once they’ve caught what they can in their own waters, take it from third world countries. It makes me both sick and sad.

Please say no to Government meats!!! South Caralina floods 09/2018. Ask your Government why a dog knows well enough to herd cows to higher ground during the Westren floods as of late? Not even Those who make powerful desisions knew well enough to allow life to evacuate. Those pigs and chickens would have found higher ground on their own!!!!

@franciscoblaha its a simple formula. Catch as much as you can. When price drops, cry to your local government that fishing isn’t sustainable and request subsidies. Government pays everyone’s happy. Next season not enough fish, cry again get further subsidies. Repeat! Meanwhile boats getting bigger, sonars improving and sea being emptied.
