The front feathers were illuminated from directly below using a 1’x1’ source that was controlled with a grid and a miniature 2-stop scrim to hold some of the light off of the bottom of the feathers and even out the exposure a bit, while maintaining some direction to the light. Finally, a focused beam was directed to a black background to provide some subtle separation and use the warm color to compliment the colors in the feathers.⠀ ⠀ The stack of 105 images was captured and internally controlled by the Z7 camera using a menu setting called Focus Shift Mode. The camera automatically captured each individual image as it stepped the focus from front to back creating a stack of images to be blended later.⠀ ⠀ Focus stacking is very different from depth of field. Employing focus stacking allows you to achieve the best of all worlds when you’re seeking to have every part of your subject tack sharp. You can also achieve the highest lens performance possible by using the optimum aperture for the lens. ⠀ ⠀ Each individual frame was captured in the RAW format, processed for tone and color, left completely unsharpened, and then blended together as 16-bit TIFF files. The final image build takes approximately 20 minutes of computer calculations to render the final image.
