Many of the representations of Black people dealing with substance abuse on television often has a weird comedic undertone, but Darla’s struggle isn’t; it’s full of dignity. How does it feel to give a character like her, such a redemptive portrayal on Queen Sugar?

“..I can hope and pray and cross my fingers and hope that I’m doing something truthful, but you never know 100% because you’re trying to do the best you can—as true to life as can be. You don’t know if you never lived it. But then when people come up to you and tell you, “No, I really went through this, and I’m telling you this is so true to my life,” that [confirmation] is the greatest gift ever. Better than any award for me. It means that you, in some way, are giving a voice to people’s stories that no one ever hears or sees, and shining a light in a way that’s not funny or this heightened thing. Amazing I remember growing up watching you , and I think I hadn’t seen u on tv for a short while (very short because your everywhere) then I saw you on PLL (which I’m a die hard fan of) and I was like it’s no way this is her if I didn’t know who you were I would’ve thought you were 16 . Watching the show , your career is amazing you look amazing and you can tell , you love what you do 💕💕 and many people love to work with you. (How do u still look 16 though)😂😂

No lie, seeing what Darla was going through just trying to respect from Aunt Vi and others made me view addicts, recovering addicts, and the sober differently. Be proud of yourself woman, your work has inspired change in at least one person. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
