X #Repost @mssophiedahl ・・・ We picked her up from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home when Lyra was six months old. She was an elegant slip of a thing, with greengage eyes and a heart murmur. She was called Princess, which always felt a bit silly, and contradictory, but she was so tough she could wear it. A few days in, she got out of a window and climbed out on the roof. I went up after her, in my nightie in the rain. I remembering thinking, who are you, funny stranger, that I’m hanging off a roof for? She loved our baby. She loved us. When she was young she would sleep on our necks; a great purring grey stole. When I was pregnant with Margot she’d sleep on my belly, and follow me around like a lion. She fought with a fox, she attacked a dog. I nicknamed her The General. She regularly dumped dead shrews, voles and mice in our bed. Occasionally she draped them artfully over the baby’s high chair. She purred like a amorous boiler. She lived for cardboard boxes. She waited outside the front door when we went out, and weaved in and out of our legs, in the dark, a shadow of welcome, when we came home. She loathed the dog with a passion when we adopted her. But baiting the dog became a daily sport. She’d hide behind bushes and spring out, claws bared. Block doorways and stairs as the dog politely edged past her. She adored drinking the dog’s water, all the while looking up at her, an unblinking miniature Don Corleone. We knew that her mighty heart would one day give. And we dreaded it, and we whispered about it, and we remembered it, when she woke us up at 3am or pulled up the carpet. Today she left our lives, as quickly and elegantly as she arrived, and we are heartbroken but so grateful to have loved and been loved by such a truly magnificent, brilliant, kind, fearless, fierce soul.
