Braiding started in Africa with the Himba people of Namibia. We have been braiding our hair for centuries. In many African tribes braided hairstyles were a unique way to identify each tribe. Because of the time it would take people would often take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them. The tradition of bonding was carried on for generations, and quickly made its way across the world. I am honored to share this bonding experience with my own daughter and add another generation of historic traditions. @olympiaohanian

Wow!!! I can’t believe someone born in the USA, grow up there will have such an amazing tradition. Very impressed. If all blacks that live in the western world can learn & practice about their root & tradition, our children will be very proud of who they are and they’ll pass it to their own children. Well done Serena. Good luck in Wimbledon!!! I’ll be watching every match u play. ??????????????

@heathersworld yes lol finally someone can relate to the struggle with me. I'm good at other things but not doing hair. Lol. Sigh. #hairstruggles my family get on my case about doing my hair and my daughter's. Lol.

So so true. As a girl in the 70s we would sit and braid each others hair, from one’s mother, sisters and our brothers. It is a humbling and loving act. Miss it. Happy to see us embracing natural hair looks
