The #Stonewall riots were a series of reactionary, impromptu protests against a police raid of the popular queer hangout of the same name in downtown New York. Raids were a monthly occurrence, as same sex relations and drag were illegal at the time. However, the mafia owned gay bars had arrangements with corrupt law enforcement in which they’d pay hush money in exchange for a heads up before raids took place — but this did not happen on June 28, 1969. According to eyewitnesses, the police stormed the Stonewall Inn, arresting 13 people, and after a lesbian patron was hit over the head with a baton, the crowd revolted — throwing cans, bricks, garbage cans, etc. — ultimately forcing the police to barricade themselves inside the bar. The queer mob threatened to light the building on fire. Ultimately, more police arrived and the mob dispersed. But riots continued the next day. It made headlines around the country, and sparked the modern gay liberation movement. In 1970, exactly one year after the Stonewall riots, the first pride march was held.
