Meet the “mother of the forest,” the Grandidier baobab (Adansonia grandidieri). This species of baobab tree is found only on Madagascar, in dry deciduous forests. It can grow as much as 98 feet (30 meters) tall, and its trunk can have a diameter of up to 9.8 feet (3 meters). While scientists are unable to determine the exact age of a baobab tree since it doesn’t have annual growth rings, they estimate that the tree can live to be 300 years old or older. Unfortunately, the Grandidier baobab is endangered due in part to habitat degradation, agricultural expansion, and exploitation for its fruit and bark.
