What do you see here? 🤔 Air traffic routes? Information moving around the global internet? This image is actually a map of the entire sky in X-rays taken by our Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)!
NICER is a mission aboard the International Space Station (@国際宇宙ステーション) whose primary goal is to determine the size of neutron stars – dense remains of dead stars. This map is composed of 22 months of data. The arcs of X-rays converge on bright spots representing NICER’s most observed locations during its mission. Future technology will track pulsers so spacecraft can navigate themselves throughout the solar system — and beyond.
