In honor of George Nelson’s birthday yesterday, we’re blasting to the past—back before he became design director at Herman Miller. Although he had no experience in furniture design, D.J. DePree was impressed by Nelson and his work to make products for better living. Nelson believed that “design is a response to social change”—something he reflected in his work on designs like the Basic Cabinet Series, which led to the Platform Bench, Thin Edge Double Bed, and Bubble Lamps.
