The whooping crane, pictured here @auduboninstitute, saw its numbers drop to just 15 birds in the early 1940s. Decades later, this number has climbed to over 800 captive and wild birds thanks to captive breeding efforts, land protection, and public education. The only remaining self-sustaining population of whooping cranes is the naturally occurring flock that breeds in Canada and winters in Texas. On their wintering grounds along the Gulf Coast of Texas, these birds feed almost exclusively on blue crabs, like this one @gulfspecimen (see second image). The coastal marshes provide excellent habitat for the crabs if salinity levels remain moderate, but when freshwater is reduced, fewer crabs are available for whooping cranes, threatening the survival of this delicate population. To alleviate this threat @savingcranes works with diverse partners in Texas to protect the coastal ecosystem, its wildlife, and the vital coastal economy. Purchasing sustainably caught seafood and helping to remove abandoned fishing gear from waterways are two ways you can take action to help save both whooping cranes and blue crabs! #whoopingcraneday #endangeredspecies #bluecrab #crabbing #sustainableseafood #Texas #ecosystem #photoark #savetogether
