Ironically, one of the cardinal rules of underwater photography (especially with the use of strobes) is to get as close as you possibly can to your subject. What made this interaction different was the presence of a female cuttlefish. This male approached me in an aggressive defensive as the female backed away. It is doubtful that the cuttlefish mistook me for another, though it is more probable that my large dome port mirrored the male’s reflection and caused him to think I was a competitive suitor.
