He had 2 jobs, 1) he was one of a few guys who sat on the Korean North/South border with a gun aimed at the crossing point, tasked with shooting any deserters. He never talked about it for obvious reasons. 2) he stood, armed, outside the door of the most popular brothel in town, tasked with keeping soldiers from entering. He told me, “The main reason we had to guard the brothels is because this was before treatment for venereal disease and we were losing so many soldiers to it we couldn’t afford it. I threatened to shoot so many men for basically just being horny” (he never had to pull the trigger). He was also an EXTREMELY God fearing, straight laced man and the only person his Commanding officer trusted. He remembered sailing from San Fran and going under the Golden Gate Bridge age 17, being crazy sea-sick the whole way over. His brother was 6’6” and a tail gunner over the Pacific for most of WWII as well. My grandfather died 2 years ago, within 45 minutes of my grandmother, his wife of 67 years.
