ミカエラ・シフリンさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ミカエラ・シフリンInstagram)「The more women help one another, the more we help ourselves.” - Sheryl Sandberg, “Lean In” @sherylsandberg is someone that I have looked up to for a while, even more so since I read her book “Lean In” a few years ago. I admire her as a women in business, and the way she handles herself in the face of inevitable challenges, setbacks, and criticism. Even more than that, I respect how she is able to admit to her own mistakes and work towards improving with an open mind. To me, one of the most important issues she has discussed is specifically how women treat each other in the workplace and beyond. More often than not, rather than being supportive and building each other up, women see and treat each other as enemies in competition as if there is only enough space for one of them, which can lead to a hostile work environment. In sports, especially individual sports, I think this hostility can be even more dramatic because there is literally only enough space for one winner. If I’m being honest, I have probably acted with this kind of hostility myself at times, but something I have realized more and more with each year is this: True, there is only one top step, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be supportive and happy for the person who stands there on any given day. It’s no secret that we all want to win. We don’t have to hide from that, to shy away or apologize for our ambitions just as we don’t have to put others down for their own. It’s as simple as this— every time someone raises the bar, rather than tear them down or hope that they fail next time, we must raise our own personal bars with them. Our competition, our co-workers, our classmates, etc. are not people to be jealous of and to bully, but people to respect and thank, because the truth is we are all helping each other to be the best that we can be.
