From Montana through Idaho to Eastern Washington the skies opened up. It rained for 24 hours. The Spokane community came out to honor and remember the life of Jess Fenton Rosskelly. While the storm is a coincidence, we read into the timing in some small way that offers solace in the face of loss. It’s as if the elements gave us permission to weep. In 2003 Jess, his dad John and I were on the Tibet side of Everest. Jess was a sprightly 20 year old. We grew fast as friends. From his annual visits to Bozeman for ice climbing to crossing paths at the cliffs, we always stayed in touch. His parents came to be close friends as our kids are the same age. In 2015 Jess and Allison invited me to be part of their wedding. It is a highlight of our family’s connection. The remembrance at the historic Bing Cosby Theatre flowed over with people and emotion. The depth of the Clan Roskelley in the valley was evident as relatives joined hands with high school friends, work colleagues and climbers. It’s moments like this that we affirm our humanity by offering support. We are all in this together. Jess, Hansjörg and David perished in pursuit of their life’s calling. While they left us much too soon, we accept and respect their decisions to live in the manner they did. As Herve Barmasse, Jess’ teammate noted: “Life exists in opposition to death. And it is precisely because our time here is limited that we need to focus on life. We need to live life with enthusiasm, creativity and imagination, because it is a gift that must not be wasted or thrown away. But this takes courage – courage to face the challenges we meet so we can reach our goals; to get up again when everyone and everything is telling us to stay down. Our friends showed this very courage by following their dreams - impossible feats, huge challenges and ground-breaking ascents. To anyone who doesn’t know us as alpinists, to anyone who doubts the point of what we do, I say we are not mad people who climb mountains to dice with death, but just people pursuing happiness with intensity. This is our life.”」5月21日 22時54分 - conrad_anker
