One minute you can think you’ve lost yourself in eternal sadness, questioning your purpose, and the next be up on the podium. This sport is full of ups and downs. You can’t let the downs keep you down. I let nerves get the best of me in the individual competition, and forgot how to fence completely. I’ve always struggled with nerves. The human brain is an amazing thing. Something as simple as the concept of ‘confidence’ can be the most difficult thing to grasp, and even tougher to hold on to. But damned if it can be the difference between first and last place. I’ve been fencing for 20 years, seen countless scenarios play out, and I’m still a victim to my own nerves. I fear I will never quite conquer it. Fortunately, my teammates were there for me and pulled me out of my funk. We went on to win 🥈in the team event, maintaining our World #1 ranking.
