In 2007, Leah was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2, commonly referred to as NF2. NF2 is a rare disorder that causes benign tumors to develop and grow on the brain, spinal cord and other parts of the body due to a lack of a specific protein that suppresses tumor growth. Despite undergoing 13 major surgeries to remove these tumors and dealing with symptoms like hearing loss, facial paralysis, and sensation loss in areas of the body, Leah has proven to be one of the toughest, most resilient people I have ever known. Along with her family and hundreds of volunteers under the “Run 4 Leah/CureNF” team, they have participated in 11 consecutive years at the Buffalo Marathon to raise awareness and money towards finding a cure for NF2. Leah has become one of my biggest inspirations over the years because despite everything she has faced, she continues to see the positivity in every situation and shine her light on everyone around her.
