These women are all Navajo engineering students at Fort Lewis College who spent their spring break installing this solar array on a local Chapter House.
The photo was taken by the very talented @rubensalgadoescudero as part of an ongoing Solar Portrait series for @ナショナルジオグラフィック which highlights the positive impact of solar-powered light systems around the world.
This specific project is part of an ongoing, multi-year commitment by the @honnoldfoundation to support the work of the @gridtribalprogram.
But mostly I wanted to share Ruben’s great photo because it’s so hard to make solar projects look cool. The work that these women are doing is important and I’m honored to support it through the Honnold Foundation. I appreciate @rubensalgadoescudero actually being able to make it look beautiful as well. Check out the rest of his work for more inspiring solar portraits.

@saph_infection What is the foot print on the planet for solar production vs say nuclear? How many square miles of solar panels would you need to serve an equal amount of customers? And what I mean is.. If a nuclear power plant takes up X number of acres to produce X amount of power and fossil fuel plant takes up Y number of acres to produce Y amount of power.... For example, per wiki, Diablo Canyon produces 18,000 GWh per year with a footprint of 900 acres. The Ivanpah solar plant produces 940 GWh per year with a footprint of 3500 acres. Something to think about.... Right? We only have so much space. Would we need to coat every surface imaginable with solar panels? Maybe we have to mount solar panels to the face of El Capitan? They ain’t making real-estate anymore! #foodforthought

Hi! ?? We’re a new storytelling campaign creating a movement to get as many people outside to enjoy the health and wellness benefits of the outdoors ☀️. We're launching on June 21st and were wondering if you'd like to be an ambassador? All that you need to do is post a quick selfie video on your IG story the day of our launch, sharing why you go outdoors tagging @OutsideICan and using #OutsideICan (Ex: #OutsideICan get away from it all and explore new places). We'd love your help if you're interested, so please DM ? us if you have any questions or would like to learn how to get further involved!

@alexandraa_d thank you. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with what I said either. Nor do I think there was anything wrong with what @alexhonnold originally said in his post that it was hard to make solar pictures look “sexy” (which is why I wrote my comment in support of him) but I’m assuming he got flack for it, therefore changing the word “sexy” to “cool” As I woman I believe it’s ok to own my sexiness and my smarts and you can have and be both and be proud of them and yes...I agree people need to stop taking things so damn seriously!! ??

@madmattjones according to NREL it would take 21,250 square miles of solar to power the US. The US is made up of 3,797,000 square miles. That’s 0.55% of the land we have available would need to be covered in solar panels but of course the answer isn’t as simple as that. Countries need diverse energy portfolios that should include solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear so they are capable of meeting energy needs throughout various times of day. Also love your #wittyhashtag ?

@breaux_on_the_geaux I feel like its a net neutral outcome when it comes to solar/batteries vs fossil fuels. They both have there ups and downs at this point in time. Both processes involve mining, manufacturing, distribution etc. And both processes are ever evolving as far as efficiency and cost. But, I’m willing to bet “alternative” energy technology will start outpacing fossil fuel tech pretty quickly as time progresses? ??♂️ ??

Today's time is demanding that 21st century should be shaped by peace, humanity, goodness of nature, protection of forests and trees, protection of environment and protection of animal birds, to protect the coming generations, to destroy the enemies of world peace and humanity.
