firsthenrie MOM, THE REAL MEANING by Dave Henrie As one who lived with my parents until my marriage, I was very fortunate as someone was always there to take care of most of my needs and wants. Dad provided safety, security and transportation. Mom awakened me at the proper time for breakfast and school and work. She made up my bed, kept my clothes clean and put away, kept my bed room from becoming a shamble, prepared food for me and the rest of the family, set the table, did the dishes, shopped for food and groceries, did all the house cleaning and laundry for everyone, took care of me when I was ill with Measles, Chicken Pox and Whopping cough and still found time to play her piano. In actuality during all those years my mother was My Own Maid (MOM). Years later on my way home from one of my overseas jobs I stopped to visit her. She was waiting for me in a wheel chair in a nursing home near where my sister lived. Instead of kneeling to hug and kiss her I spent most of the fifteen minutes I was there talking about me. When I left, I hadn’t any idea I would never see her again. Sadly, I never thanked her or told her I loved her then or at any other time during all her years as my Mom. The bond between mother and child, stronger than most, for some reason did not have the hold upon me as it did on others. Perhaps it was a characteristic of certain age groups but as I now recall while growing-up I never heard anyone in my family say I love you. This was carried over into my own marriage and family. Happily, my children, Suzy and Jim, and grandchildren Ashley, David and Lorenzo ALWAYS end our conversations with “I Love You”, to which I respond in kind.
