'Coiba National Park's main island, Isla Coiba, was once home to a penal colony, a high security prison from which it was impossible to escape. Declared a national park in 1992 and a World Heritage Site in 2005, it is a lost world of pristine ecosystems and unique fauna. Nowadays it is not possible to sleep on the island or visit it on your own, you have to be part of a tour in order to island-hop your way around.
