It was 2 hours of Bruce Springsteen, a one man show for nearly all of it with the exception of a couple songs he does with his wife. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was so good that the Tony Awards created a new award to honor the show. The stories he told about his songs were more like beautiful rambling poetry. So many things were impressive about the show - the fact that he did this for a year straight, night after night. The body of work. But he also was constantly tweaking the stories he told and changing them depending on his mood. Prior to seeing the show, I had heard that he set up the song “Dancing in the Dark” by saying it was mainly about his mother battling Alzheimer’s - and how she loved to dance even as the darkness crept into her mind and memory. But when I saw the performance, he had already moved on to another interpretation; one of how our country is in a dark place but we need to keep hope alive.
