So yesterday I returned to #quickstop - the most famous convenience store in the world, and the wellspring from which all my blessings have flowed. Standing with me are the unseen heroes of Clerks, Sarla and Tarlochen Thapar - the owners of Quick Stop and R.S.T. Video. Mr. T hired me in the summer of 1989 (shortly after Batman was released). During the job interview he said “I see you have convenience store experience. We own the Quick Stop too. Would you be willing, from time to time, to also work in the convenience store?” I responded thusly: “Working in a video store is my dream job. But if you need help in the convenience store every once in awhile, I guess I can do that too.” And with that, I sealed my fate: 4 years later, I would shoot the first scene of Clerks on the very spot where the job interview with Mr. Thapar took place. So there they are: the crucial lynchpins upon which my story hinges. If Thapar doesn’t hire me that day, my movie career never happens. These two beautiful bosses not only gave me a $4.50 an hour job when I really needed it, they gave me somewhere to dream and scheme a future in film, on what would become the set of my first movie. If you like me or anything I’ve ever made, these fine folks whom I love are largely to blame.
