In 1991 I was working the Black Expo at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. I was tasked with giving out posters for a new film by a young black director named John Singleton. It starred by favorite rapper at the time @icecube and when I got to see it I was blown away. It was a new dimension of black representation in film. That film was an important part of my hiphop and artistic education, but like a great artist, John didn’t stop there. From Higher Learning to Baby Boy, from Hustle and Flow to Snowfall, John Singleton excellently depicted the beauty and our struggles. I had the pleasure of meeting John Singleton a couple of times and he was always gracious and supportive. I send my love and my condolences out to his family, his friends and his fans.
