For #NationalPoetryMonth, 26-year-old poet Melissa Lozada-Oliva (@ellomelissa) is sharing with us her forthcoming poem, “If you cast me in a movie, cast me as.” Inspired by the legacy of singer-songwriter Selena Quintanilla, the poem is Melissa’s way of expressing why representation matters. 🤘🏽 “What we’re looking for on a screen or in a book is ourselves. When we don’t see that, it’s damaging,” says Melissa. “This makes it impossible to cast the perfect Latina in a role, because there is no Latina who will represent us all. We are everything we carry and everything we’ve been trying to forget.”
Today on our story and IGTV channel, Melissa recites part of her poem and is joined by Yesika Salgado (@yesikastarr), Melania-Luisa Marte (@sheismela) and Kim Guerra (@brownbadassbonita), who will also be participating in the #WeAllGrow Summit (@weallgrowlatina) next month.
