After a decade of mapping Earth’s most remote polar landscapes, our Operation IceBridge enters its final year. Using a fleet of research aircraft, the mission studies annual changes in thickness of sea ice, glaciers and ice sheets to better understand connections between polar regions and the global climate system.

Now, it will hand the torch over to one of our newest satellite missions, the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2, also known as ICESat-2. From space, ICESat-2 will use take precise measurements of elevation that allows scientists to see where ice is flowing, melting or growing, and to investigate the global impacts of these changes.
