This week we're looking at how pickups are made, here's how it works.
1. WINDING: Pickup winding specialists use purpose-built machines to wind magnet wire onto bobbins. 2. ASSEMBLY: Single-coil wound bobbins get assembled into pickups by attaching covers, baseplates and leads, according to pickup model. Humbucking pickups get matched with a second coil, both are attached to a larger baseplate and specially wired to reduce hum. 3. POTTING: Most Fender pickups are “wax-potted” to reduce microphonic feedback. This involves using a custom vacuum potting machine to draw melted wax into the windings of the pickup. Depending upon the historic spec of a particular model or series, some pickups are shellac-potted or not potted at all. 4. INSTALLATION: Completed pickups are installed into pickguard assemblies, bridges or bezels, which are then screwed into guitars. Pickups can also be screwed directly into the body, such as Telecaster neck, Jazz and Precision Bass pickups. #InternationalGuitarMonth
