The underwater world is stunning 😻 There’s one vital thing missing from this video though: Coral 🌊 Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth. More fish species live in two acres of reef than there are bird species in the whole of Mexico, Canada & USA combined! This diversity takes time and most reefs are around 5-10,000 years old; but sadly with current conditions they’re disappearing fast. Warming oceans causes the corals to “bleach” which if sustained over time leads to their death; resulting in marine life losing their home and the development of huge “coral graveyards” underwater - like this one 👆🏼 I’ve dived a few of these and I honestly cried into my mask, it’s heartbreaking 🐠 In 2016 alone we lost over 30% of the Great Barrier Reef. In ONE year! If present rates of destruction are allowed to continue, 60% of the world's coral reefs will be destroyed over the next 30 years. Not to mention the fact that 80% of coral reefs are critically overfished 🎣🌱 If this continues future generations will not be able to experience coral reefs and enjoy the beauty of these ecosystems - as a result tourism industries in many parts of the world will collapse.
