Monday night I performed The Flower at an event @adamdollestudio in support of BAWN to help get an initiative on the Florida ballot to ban the sale of automatic weapons and to require those who currently own them to register them. I had the chance to meet Marjorie Stoneman Douglas graduate @davidhogg who was in school at the time of the shooting and has spent the last year traveling the country working to end gun violence. I played the event because I have met so many families who’s lives have been turned inside out by the death and maiming of their loved ones by the use of these weapons. It is my belief that these military grade weapons, which were designed for one purpose, to kill people quickly and with great force, should not be accessible to those who would in their anger or mental instability access them easily. They are military weapons and shouldn’t be sold to civilians simply to make a profit, any more than a SAM-7 shoulder launch missile should be. Whether it was the massacre at the pulse night club in Orlando, the Route 91 concert in Vegas, or the shooting at Parkland High school, the families all told me one thing: these weapons were the instruments used to kill my family member within minutes and seconds and let’s work together to make sure they don’t do the same thing to other families. Before anyone comments “this won’t change anything”, I want to be clear, I don’t believe there is just one solution to ending the slaughter of 40,000 Americans each year at the hands of gun violence. Rather, there are thousands of small steps required to reduce that number and this is just one of them.
