Strong, fearless, and outspoken. That’s how Black women are almost always described. While we are strong, we are not impervious to pain. Or not in need of protection. One of the costs of being considered so strong is being left out of the discourse related to injustice and advocacy. The fact is that Black women are much more likely to be victims of human and sex trafficking. The fact is that Black women receive considerably less attention when they go missing. The fact is that perpetrators of crimes against Black women statistically receive lighter sentences. That’s why I’m proud to feature the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) in this month’s #LoveOurGirls newsletter. They are doing crucial work in the fight to end disparities faced by Black women and girls in the justice system through education, innovative awareness building, and collaboration across the diaspora.
