In Rwanda, a country known as “Mille Collines” or Land of a Thousand Hills, they have begun a 100 day mourning period as a remembrance of the horrific events of the genocide the tore that country apart 25 years ago. This period of memory and mourning reflects the efforts the country has made to renew and heal the wounds of that time. This shot made on the road from Kigali enroute to Goma, in the northwest corner of the country, across the border into the Congo, which was at that time the site of one of the largest refugee camps in the world. Shot this in the late nineties, during a stay in Rwanda to document the aftermath of the genocide. It was a incredibly difficult time as the people struggled with the aftermath of so much violence, much inflicted by fellow villagers and neighbors. #memory #rwanda #healing
