I was excited for the commercial to not only air during the Oscars, but to be in the commercial along side some of my fav athletes of all time. The original piece showed me fencing at the Olympic Games and my celebration after winning. I was excited for the sport of fencing and opportunity to show athletes of color in non traditional spaces. Unfortunately, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) blocked that from happening. They requested that fencing be removed from the commercial entirely and claimed Nike would need permission from me in order to use my image. Nike pushed back, but in the end, the FIE went ghost and fencing was cut from the commercial. You’ll be thrown many curve balls in life, things you don’t expect, sometimes even from organizations that should have your back. I believe that everything that is meant for you will never miss you and when God has a plan for you, no one, despite their greatest efforts, can block those blessings from happening. Though my time on the screen may have been cut short for reasons unknown, I’m still here. Here to claim my seat and be a face for a sport that still struggles to be an inclusive space for everyone. My billboard reads BE THE HERO YOU DIDN’T HAVE. There are more than 10 billboards between New York and Los Angeles. This one in Times Square may just be my favorite.
