The diversity we saw on the Fall 2019 runways has been a long time coming. Historically, models who diverged from the “norms” of thin, white, and cisgendered were too often excluded. Though strides have been made within the fashion world to catch up to the larger cultural movement toward inclusion, if you talk to the models who have lived through the changes, it’s clear there is still work to be done. The slights are pervasive, with black model stars like @selenaforrest, shown here, continually confronted with hairstylists and makeup artists unwilling to adapt to the nuances of working with darker skin and textured hair.
