An important part of The Queen’s work is to support and encourage voluntary service. One of the ways in which Her Majesty does this is through involvement with over 600 patronages, which cover every area of the charity and voluntary sector.
In the first picture The Queen is at the Women's Royal Voluntary Service at St James's Palace, London in 1978.
In the second, The Queen is pictured in 1975 meeting British Red Cross nurses in Barnsley market.
Her Majesty has been Patron of the RNLI since 1952 and is also Patron of The Scout Association. Volunteers are a vital part of their organisations.
