Zuzana Caputova, a 45-year-old lawyer known as "Slovakia's Erin Brockovich," was just elected the country's first ever female head of state. Caputova on Saturday thanked voters in a speech in which she spoke not just Slovak but also Hungarian, Czech, Roma and Ruthenian— a show of unity with the nation's minority groups and rejection of the nationalist rhetoric popular in some neighboring countries. During her campaign, Caputova voiced support for minority communities and called for more LGBT rights (same-sex marriage is illegal in Slovakia).
