He is not Asian enough for Asia, and not American enough for America. So, he is floating in between, a cultural castaway. I’m reminded of the paintings of Georg Baselitz, whose upside-down figures are meant to diminish or destroy their figurative evocations, so there is also a destructive element to the Descendent. During the process of my paintings, there always comes a point where I nearly wipe out the image with a destructive wash, and then I work feverishly to bring the image back from the brink. Perhaps the Descendent is a bit like Little Boy, hovering in the sky and bestowed a name that belies all of its nuclear potential. The homophone to Descendent is Descendant, and many of my friends have remarked that the character reminds them of my son. In fact, they say that I’ve been drawing him long before he was ever born. So, the Descendent exists in an alternate reality of my own making - the walls between the dimensions are porous and allow for interactions between worlds.
