Tammy Lewis was born more than three months early and weighed only 1 pound and 4 ounces. Her family was told that their newborn’s survival rate was 5 to 10%. But she beat the odds, becoming the smallest surviving baby in the state of Texas at the time, according to Lewis. Now, 34 years later, she works as a respiratory therapist at the same neonatal intensive care unit that saved her life. “I wanted to be able to give back to the patients and families in the same situation that I was in,” she said.
