FDA approves FIRST “rapid effect” drug for women suffering from postpartum depression. This is huge. And it’s about time (and also time I started reading The NYT on a device. I hear that.). It’s much too $$ right now and we must fight to make it accessible.

It was trialed on 3 humans with “insufficient findings” on breast milk side effects, however there is evidence to show it rapidly decreases milk supply (which is already a treatment for PPA/PPD). You are not allowed to be alone with your children or unsupervised.

lookatmygreatlife Anyone know how long the effects of the infusion last? Does it say in the article? I worked on the ketamine nasal spray clinical trials and while I never knew who got placebo vs. ketamine, I did see rapid effects, but I always wondered how long the effects lasted before you need another treatment.

kgodburn Totally agree on the accessible piece - we need to make sure that the price comes down AND it’s covered by Medicaid and private insurers AND that women are screened AND that they are prescribed what works best. This is a small, but important first step!

madamfaulk I know PPD is real and serious. But delivering a drug intravenously with 48hrs observation!??? Where’s the warning about continuing to breast feed? I’m sorry but this doesn’t sound safe.

jamieallison7015 A CNN article mentioned that it takes 60 hours to administer the treatment by infusion. THAT is also inaccessible for moms.
