This is a video taken backstage this past NYFW of me and my team doing braids on some of the models for the @レイチェルコーミー runway show .
There have been a large discussion happening about not having enough persons backstage that can do models of color hair and or braid . Model @olivia_anakwe has post a video that has gone viral with her frustration of being in a show where the look required braids but not ONE person hired to do hair on that show ( including the KEY artist ) knew how to actually braid . After checking if any of the other models could braid , Olivia found someone on the nail team that could . The nail tech hired on this show to do ONLY nails had to step away from doing so in order to braid Olivia’s hair for the hair team . 🤦🏽‍♀️ We also saw model @londonemyers express her frustration on social media about being backstage and no one knowing how to style her fro. Instead not one stylist touched her hair and sent her down the runway with lint in her hair because they were intimidated.
This has now sparked convos within the film and television arenas as well of not having enough union hairstylist knowing how to style black actors hair on screen . Can we talk about this ? Can any designers chime in? Producers ? Models , actors , hairstylist , makeup artist , casting directors? Etc?? Would love to hear from you all. I think its time we have this open dialog . I can personally speak from my many years of assisting that this is not a new problem but I’m happy we are FINALLY speaking up about it .
I know this can be a sensitive and uncomfortable topic for some but I don’t think we can see change happen if we aren’t talking about it so that we can all understand each other’s point of views ? Am I right? (Anyone that doesn’t feel comfortable speaking publicly, please feel free and safe to DM me your experiences or thoughts on this topic ) ❤️❤️❤️
