Jim Croce - Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels) • I recently had this funny realization - when it comes to raw sentiment, Jim Croce’s polar opposite is Father John Misty. I like what each does, but I started to notice that while Croce sings in a heartfelt and earnest way, Father John almost seems like a reaction to that whole era of 70’s singer songwriters in how sarcastic and detached his persona appears. In today’s culture, where so many people seem to be trying to BE ironic, Jim’s perspective seems novel nowadays. It catches you off-guard - how sorta innocent and sweet he sounds compared to what you commonly hear today. There’s something to this and maybe it’s that if you’re busy being ironic, it’s hard to tell who it is you really are and how you actually feel. - Wes

Really interesting take. I hold Pure Comedy as the second best album of all time (22, a million being my number one spot), but I wholeheartedly agree that even in his most honest moments, like on “Leaving LA” it’s can feel like there’s a wall between Josh Tillman and the listener. I feel Cleopatra was miles better than the debut album in that regard where songs like Stubborn Love felt like they were about me, songs like Cleopatra feel like they’re about someone brave enough to expose themselves. I can’t wait to hear what the next album from The Lumineers will be like!

Everyone’s afraid to be the guy caught off guard these days—we’re all so informed, and have such big educated opinions about everything—and this song is the antithesis of that mindset. As saccharine as it is musically, it’s extremely raw emotionally and none of us in the postmodern age would ever be caught dead as the guy on a payphone who misses her so much that he’ll lay it on the line with an uncaring operator in a futile last chance to even reach her, let alone pour his heart out to her. Croce is more of a man than any of us still standing.

Jim Croce is one of my favorite songwriters of all time, so glad that you mentioned him! Such a tragic destiny... I often play his witty upbeat “Carwash blues” here on my shows in Moscow, Russia, also have “Lover’s cross” in my repertoire, such a honest & heartfelt song

Funny, you just expressed exactly how I feel about @thelumineers music. I love all genres of music, but your music touches my soul and reaches me in a way no one has before. You have no idea what a gift, a saving grace you've been❤️

Jim Croce was simply perfect. His songs touch me deeper with just a voice and guitar than anything else I’ve ever experienced. I knew you guys were special upon first listen. You get it too ♥️♥️
