These are the remains of a new species of ancient humans called Homo naledi. They were discovered in a cave in South Africa in 2013, and they really shook up all of our notions about what it means to be human. For one, the fossils reveal that Homo naledi had a mix of primitive and derived traits — something that was previously unheard of. Another wild realization was that this new species coexisted with modern humans. Did they interbreed with each other? Did they compete with each other?
