Working dogs have long been an important part of life in arctic areas. Early canines served as hunting partners, camp protectors, and sled pullers. In fact, sled dogs have been in use for over 1,000 years, and they continue to be used in rural parts of Alaska, Canada and Greenland.

Carrying on that historic tradition are this playful pair, Messi-Masi (left) and Jjackman. These modern working dogs are explosive detection canines at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) where they help keep airline passengers safe.

Since 2001, TSA has trained explosives detection canine teams to operate in the aviation, multimodal, mass transit, and cargo environments. Once trained, these teams can quickly locate and identify dangerous materials that may present a threat to transportation systems.
