Photo by @daisygilardini | The Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard lies midway between Norway and the North Pole, between 74°81N and 10°35E. Polar bears have been protected since 1973. The archipelago is home to more polar bears than people: There are roughly 3,000 polar bears and 2,000 people. It's one of the last real Arctic wildernesses, with breathtaking landscapes and teaming with wildlife — polar bears, foxes, reindeer, walruses, whales and all sorts of bird life. Almost 60% of the archipelago is covered by glacier ice which unfortunately — as everywhere else on the planet — is disappearing due to climate change. As of 2017, the maximum extent of Arctic sea ice was the second-lowest on record. As polar bears depend on sea ice for survival, the future is not bright.
