An abandoned military complex in eastern Germany known as the “forbidden city” tells a complicated military history of the country.

The complex was inaugurated in 1916, housing the military of German Kaiser Wilhelm II, then serving as the Nazi’s military command center in World War II, before serving as headquarters to the Soviets’ high command during the Cold War.
