Lovely piece of news to wake up to this morning... So check this out: It’s not easy to get the LA Times to review your play here in LA, hell, its not easy to get ANYONE to review your play in LA. Newspaper cut backs have seen theatre reviews be one of the first sections to be tossed aside. Major reviewers of 99 seat LA theatre have recently stopped reviewing (Hollywood reporter, Variety, LA Weekly, etc...) And with more theatre performances per capita than any other city in the country, there are only so many reviewers and only so many plays will be reviewed. (shout out to all the local bloggers keeping theatre journalism alive in this city!) This is one of the many reasons #CanyonPlay is so special....it’s a play about LA, for LA, written by a Los Angeleno and performed inside a LA historic landmark building. And the fact that LA critics are digging it is a testament to these two LA companies, @iamatheatre and @latinotheaterco, pooling their recourses, bringing together this incredible team, and telling this story the way it should be told, where it should be told. LA gets a BAD rap when it comes to theatre, for no other reason than people just not knowing enough about the scene. LA is a hot bed for theatre. There are literally hundreds of theatres and companies producing amazing work everyday. And the more awesome playwrights that move out here to write for the next Hulu or Netlfix or Amazon show, the more opportunities LA theatres will have at producing exciting, well-written world premieres, plays that would have otherwise premiered in NY or Chicago. IAMA’s had quite a few this past couple years: A Dog’s House, Cult Of Love, Sinner’s Laundry, Redline, and now Canyon. May this just be the beginning. Congrats @latinotheaterco and congrats @iamatheatre...I’m honored to be amongst ya. ??
