Ramirez and Castillo met at a shelter for immigrants in southern Mexico called La 72, in the state of Tabasco. Ramirez was staying at La 72; Castillo lived nearby and would come to the shelter on occasion to perform. “She would sing so the immigrants would laugh and maybe leave a little bit of their grief and sadness behind,” Ramirez says. After a few months, “the idea of forming a trans-women caravan came to mind.” They soon began heading north. As they traveled across Mexico, they picked up about a dozen more people, including Murcia. “Word spread that a caravan was forming, and more trans individuals arose and wanted to join.”⁣
