As a young woman, Nelle “Harper” Lee planned to attend law school but felt the call to pursue writing instead. She moved from Alabama to New York, where she worked to support herself and her writing aspirations. Lee reconnected with her childhood friend fellow writer Truman Capote, and worked as his writing assistant for the New Yorker article series, “In Cold Blood.” •
In 1960, Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published. The book was immediately successful—the plot was based on her own childhood, growing up a tomboy in a small Alabama town with a lawyer father. It won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and became a classic of modern American literature. Lee received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007, among many other awards and honors.
