A man who narrated brutal Islamic State videos in English has come out of the shadows after being captured by an American-backed militia. That man, Mohammed Khalifa, is a 35-year-old Canadian and is in custody. "I don’t regret it," he said in an hourslong conversation with #nytimes corespondent Rukmini Callimachi. Mohammed said he immigrated as a child from Saudi Arabia to Toronto, where he learned to speak like a native Canadian. He said he had studied computer systems technology and worked for a contracting company before leaving for Syria. Terrorism experts say it is hard to overstate the role his effortless English narration played in bringing the terrorist group’s propaganda to English speakers and luring some of them to its cause. To verify Mohammed’s claim that he narrated “Flames of War,” a 2014 propaganda video which showed the execution of Syrian prisoners, #nytimes asked 3 audio-forensic experts to compare the anonymous voice on the propaganda video with a televised statement by Mohammed which aired in Syria shortly after his capture. Though such analyses are not foolproof, all 3 experts concluded it was highly likely that Mohammed was the narrator. Later, a U.S. official briefed on the matter confirmed to The New York Times that Mohammed was indeed the narrator. @ivorprickett shot this photo of Mohammed.
