Happy Oscar Sunday! Thanks to Hanah Anderson and the BBC, here is a chart that shows you the Oscar Best Picture winners of the last 20 years and the ratio of women who spoke in those films to men who spoke in those films. ‪it’s important to remember the entertainment business’ historic bias against women, especially non-white and non-cis women, by not only leaving our narratives and work out of top grossing and winning films, but also our literal voices too, a practice which dates back to the Roman Empire. (Read Mary Beard’s, “Women and Power.”) .
I’ve shared this before but I’ll share it again: In the feature I co-wrote and directed, “Paint it Black”, starring Alia Shawkat and Janet Mcteer (on @ネットフリックス ), no two men speak to each other in the entire film. That’s on purpose. There is a message in that choice, which does not aim to exclude the voices of men, but instead let women be overwhelmingly heard.
