It can be tough. Share your strategies. . I normally get out every trip by working solo on the “shoulders” of the day... early mornings and late nights. Lots of 3 am wake ups... back by breakfast and dinner then off to shoot the stars. Rinse and repeat every day. I’m blessed that my family wants me out there. But this trip to Arizona I involved my son who’s just old enough now to learn the ropes. He got to see how weird dad is out here. Mom already knows. . In advance of any trip I’ll normally spend time online scouting a dozen or so spots to visit, enjoy and shoot... categorize them into regions and prioritize those regions by how bad I want to see it and the number of different landscapes I can get in the smallest area. I then divide by three creating Plans A, B and C. That way I can easily move on to the next plan if conditions aren’t right or something else pops up. . This weekend heavy snow cut off all of my routes to plan A and B... Sedona and Flagstaff. No biggie.. on to plan C... Tonto National Forest. Welp... snow closed those roads from north as well. Despite driving a giant pickup truck, if the sign says closed. It’s closed. . Can’t give up, so I thought I’d wiggle my way up there from the south where it was just heavy rain. Made it about halfway before plan C came to an abrupt halt. See second video. Turn around. Don’t drown. . We 180°d, went into 4-Wheel mode and started bouncing along muddy backcountry roads, far from people and cell coverage. Plan D. . Free to roam.
